Part 2: Selecting the Venue

Finding a great venue is a fundamental part of HackFu success. But how do you know when you’ve found a genuine “HackFu Venue”?

What typically happens is that an initial idea of the concept is formed, we then find a great venue and then we start to shape things so that they all fit together. 

The first step is to devise a short-list of potential places to hold the event. There is no formula for this but there are some places you can go and search first, one of the most profitable sources are locations that are advertised to TV and film producers as locations for filming. 

Many historic sites, museums and attractions have a section on their website about this and is a good starting point. The reason is that these locations are used to large numbers of people descending on them and the things that film crews need largely cross over with what’s needed of a HackFu venue. However, don’t stop there in your quest for a venue. We’ve had success with all of the following types of venue:

  • Museums
  • Historic Buildings
  • Enterprise Parks
  • Former Military Bases

So don’t limit the scope of your search and be creative in finding potential venues in the location you want to hold your event. However, that’s not the end of the story. Once you have a shortlist, how do you pick the one that’s right for you. 

We’ve found success by looking at two key factors, the facilities at the potential venue but most importantly the people who own, rent or lease the site (aka your HackFu hosts). 

By far we’ve found that these are the people who can make the difference between a good event and an awesome one.
